Santa Catalina Island, also called Catalina Island, or Catalina, is situated off the coast of the California , United States . Measuring 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across , Santa Catalina has its highest point of 2,097 feet (639 m) at Mount Orizaba .
Most of the island is controlled by the Catalina Island Conservancy, a private nonprofit organization. The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be a responsible steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, education and recreation
The total population on Santa Catalina Island is almost 4000 persons, most of them living in the Avalon city.
People have been living on Santa Catalina Island for at least 7,000 years. Archaeologists excavating at Little Harbor for the past 40 years keep coming up with earlier and earlier dates. They find evidence of increasingly complex material cultures with a strong maritime adaptation. These earlier groups of peoples exploited the rich resources of the sea from mollusks, to fish, and marine mammals such as sea lions.
Flora & Fauna
About 400 species of native plants grow on the island. These plants may be seen at the island’s Wrigley memorial & Botanic Gardens and the newly remodeled Golf Gardens ,miniature golf course. The island is home to five native land mammals : the Island Fox , California Ground Squirrrel , Santa Catalina Island Harvest Mouse , Santa Catalina Island Deer Mouse and Ornate Shrew.
Despite of being banned decades ago, toxic chemicals dumped in the channel continue to contaminate the natural habitat of birds, fish, and mammals, and disrupt their ability to breed.
About a million tourists visit the island every year . Catalina is serviced by ferries and the “Airport in the Sky.”.The Ferries trips takes approximately an hour and costs approx $65 round trip. Helicopter service is also available from Long Beach or San Pedro.
