Renaissance Center also known as the Ren Cen , located in the center of Detroit , is a group of seven interconnected skyscrapers . The Renaissance Center complex is owned by General Motors being its headquarters. The central tower, the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, is the tallest all hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere since its construction in 1977 and is featuring the largest rooftop restaurant, Coach Insignia.
Construction began in 1973, and with its first tower completed in 1976, the Detroit skyline was forever changed . Conceived by Henry Ford II and financed primarily by the Ford Motor Company, the Renaissance Center became the world’s largest private development with an anticipated cost of $500 million . The project was intended to revitalize the economy of Detroit. In its first year it generated over $1 billion in economic growth for the downtown.
John Portman was the architect for the original design , constructing the world’s tallest hotel at the time. Four 39-story office towers surround the 73-story hotel which includes a shopping center, restaurants, brokerage firms, banks, a four-screen movie theatre and private clubs . Two additional 21-story office towers known as Tower 500 and Tower 600 opened in 1981. The complex was then called ‘ a city within a city ‘.
In 1977, the central hotel tower of the Renaissance Center, which opened as the Western International Detroit Plaza Hotel, became the world’s tallest all-hotel skyscraper. Since 1986, the Renaissance Center’s central tower has held the distinction as the tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. Originally completed in 1977, GM purchased the complex in 1996 for use as its global headquarters. The facility features a 74-story, 1,300-room Marriott Hotel, surrounded by four 39-story office towers totaling a combined 2.3 million square feet. Each of the five towers rests atop a five-story podium structure containing 165,000 square feet of retail space
In 2004, General Motors completed a US$500 million renovation of its world headquarters, which included the addition of the five-story Wintergarden atrium, providing access to the International Riverfront. Renaissance Center now totals 5,552,000 square feet (515,800 m2) making it one of the world’s largest office complexes.
