History of Radio City Music Hall
It was designed by the architect Edward Durell Stone and Donald Deskey . It was initially planned asa new home for Metropolitan Opera , but in 1929 , after the Crash of the Stock Market , the opera company didn’t wanted the Radio City anymore and withdrew from the project . Initially called International Music Hall , the theatre got the „Radio City Music Hall” name by its first tenant , the Radio Corporation of America . Radio City Music Hall was a project of Rockefeller and it was opened to the public on December 27 , 1932 with a Ray Bolger and Martha Graham show – a return to high-class variety entertainment . But the new format was unsuccesful as the program was too long and indiviual acts were lost in the cavernous hall . At the begining of 1933 the Music Hall converted to the familiar format of a feature film with a spectacular stage show which Rothafel had perfected at the Roxy Theatre. After that the it became the premiere showcase of the for RKO-Radio Studio films . The film plus stage spectacle format continued at the Music Hall until 1979 with four complete performances presented every day. By the 1970s , it was difficult for Radio City to secure exclusive bookings of many films and preferred to show only G-rated movies . In 1979 the regular film showings at the Radio City Music Hall ended . There were plans to convert it into an office space , but in the end , after a renovation , it reopened to the public in 1980 .
Radio City Music Hall is currently managed by Madison Square Garden, Inc . Movie premieres and feature runs are no more often shows anf their place was taken by concerts and live stage shows . In the last 30 years , Radio City Music Hall presented the leading pop and rock performes and also televised events like Grammy Awards, the Tony Awards, and the MTV Music Awards.
Radio City Music Hall description
Radio City was the largest movie theatre in the world when it was opened , woth 5933 seats . The interior with its auster Art Deco lines represented a break with the traditional ornate rococo ornament associated with movie palaces at the time. The radiating arches of the proscenium united the large auditorium, allowing a sense of intimacy as well as grandeur. The interior decor was created by designer Donald Deskey. Deskey’s geometric Art Deco designs incorporate glass, aluminum, chrome, and leather in the ornament for the theater’s wall coverings, carpet, light fixtures, and furniture. His work borrowed heavily from the European Modern aesthetic style, of which he was the foremost exponent in the United States.
The Great Stage, measuring 66.5 feet (20 m) deep and 144 feet (44 m) wide, resembles a setting sun. Its system of elevators was so advanced that the U.S. Navy incorporated identical hydraulics in constructing World War II aircraft carriers; according to Radio City lore, during the war, government agents guarded the basement to assure the Navy’s technological advantage.
