Fraser Island Short History
The indigenous people of Fraser Island are The Butchulla people . It is uncertain how long Fraser Island had been occupied by the Butchulla people . Captain Cook first sighted the Fraser Island Butchulla people during 1770 and named Indian Head on the eastern beach after them and then Captain Matthew Flinders was the first white man who came in contact woth the islanders in peaceful ways. Colonization by Europeans caused great conflicts with the Aboriginal people as the European settlers did not understand or respect their tribal boundaries, their social structure or the importance to them of their environment.
In 1991 Frasier Island was nominated for World Heritage listing . Today , the management of the island is the responsability of the Department of Environment and Heritage through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

Tourists come to Fraser Island to see its variety of beaches, its many lakes and creeks, towering rainforest, and native wildlife . It’s a place for camping out, bird-watching, and bush walking through eucalyptus woods and low-lying “wallum” heaths that offer a spectacular wildflower display every spring and summer. It’s fringing wetlands feature pristine mangrove colonies and sea-grass beds, where dugongs and swamp wallabies thrive. Guided eco tours by four wheel drive vehicle are available from several operators based in the city of Hervey Bay, but some visitors prefer to self-drive on the island. Many visitors come mainly for the fishing, especially along the ocean beaches of the eastern coast. A big fishing competition is an annual event here, running for a whole week.
Three days is about the time most visitors find necessary to see all the tourist attractions, but there are also one day tours to the most popular spots for people unable to spend longer.
